How to find a lawyer

Our service promotes increased access to justice for the Canadian public.  It allows people who do not qualify for Legal Aid but who cannot afford regular legal fees to find lawyers who charge reduced rates for qualified clients.

Locating a Lawyer

There are two ways to find a lawyer through our service -- by browsing our online directory, or by phoning our call centre.

To find a lawyer online, visitors search according to location and type of legal expertise required. The Directory returns a list of participating lawyers, ordered by location proximity.  Each lawyer has a personal profile page with detailed information about his or her practice (including location, special services, languages spoken, etc.) to help visitors decide which lawyer best suits their needs.

Any member of the public is welcome to browse our online directory, free of charge and without site registration.

People without access to the Internet can telephone our hotline at 1-866-919-3219.  Based on location and the type of legal problem involved, a call centre agent will provide a short list of lawyers who practice in the area of law required, and who accept JusticeNet clients. Please note that call centre agents do not have legal training themselves and cannot provide legal advice.

Working with a Lawyer

Once a lawyer has been selected, the client contacts him or her and they make a mutual decision on whether to go ahead, depending on the circumstances of each individual case.

Lawyers listed on our Directory offer their expertise on a reduced fee basis as a public service, in recognition of the fact that traditional legal fees make it very difficult for many “average” people to get legal help.

Since participating lawyers usually run a regular practice in addition to the time they devote to this service, and since case commitments may change on short notice, it is at each lawyer’s discretion whether to accept a JusticeNet case (even if their status is marked "Available" on the Directory).

Lawyers are not obliged to provide further services to a client upon the conclusion of a case, nor is the acceptance of future cases with the same client required to be under the same terms and conditions.

Testimonial

“Our justice system will be further strengthened with the introduction of the JusticeNet program, as it will serve to complement existing access to justice programs intended for people who do not qualify for legal aid.”
